Mantra Pushpam
(Taittriya Aaranyakam 1.22)

Introduction:

This part of the Taittriya Aaranyakam is one of the most famous of all veda mantras and remains quite popular till date. This mantra is recited at every properly performed pooja and could have been heard by almost all of us in many major functions or poojas etc.

The Upanishad:

Om! O Devas! May we hear only the good with our ears; O the ones to be worshipped! May we see only the good with our eyes; may we have strong limbs and bodies, which will enable us to pray and worship the Devas. May we live unto such time the Devas feel we should live. May the Lord Indra, of great fame, shower some grace and good on us. May the Lord Surya (the Sun God), the knower of all, shower some grace and good on us. May the Lord Garuda, who has an unfettered clear path (to liberation), shower some grace and good on us. May the Lord Brhaspati shower some grace and good on us.

Om Shanti ! Shanti ! Shanti !

(This paragraph has got a hidden meaning – this is to say that there is a raft available to cross over all the forces of Nature and to see the God beyond all of them – God himself is the raft – we have to seek His help to see Him. We need to understand that He, indeed is the raft. This fact is also re-emphasized by one of the Tamil Saivite Saints who sung thus: “avan arulaalae avan thaal vanangi” – meaning – “Worshipping Him by His Grace”.

We worship and praise Lord Gubera, who is the Lord of Lords and who is the giver of all victories. He, who is the fulfiller of all desires and the Lord of Wealth, let him bless me with enough wealth to fulfill all my desires. Praises to thee, Gubera, the Lord of Wealth and King of Kings !! (This mantra is very often chanted at the time of deeparadhana at all temples – this starts with the words “raajathi raajaya”)
